You might agree that building your own gingerbread house is a kind of childhood dream for almost everyone who bakes and decorates gingerbread. Today, we will fulfill that dream together.
If you've never tried baking a gingerbread house before, Halloween is the perfect time to dive right in. You don't have to worry about it being perfect. On the contrary!
Halloween gingerbread houses are much easier for you; you don't have to worry about messing anything up. Everything is part of the Halloween story you are telling with the house.
Imperfection is an Advantage
With a Halloween gingerbread house, not everything has to be precise. A crooked window, a random line, or a slightly asymmetrical roof? That is exactly what we want from a "spooky" creation. Small imperfections will be seen as part of the design—after all, it's a haunted house!
Working with White Icing
Again, we will decorate with white icing—both basic and transparent. So, prepare both. Snow-white icing on dark gingerbread always creates the best contrast and highlights the details that transform the house into something out of a horror story or a fairytale.
Creating the Halloween Story
You already have detailed instructions for assembling the gingerbread house in a separate lesson. This Halloween version is much simpler. It consists of a base (choose any shape), gable walls, and a large roof. How irregular you make the house is entirely up to you. For Halloween, more unevenness is better!
1. Decorate the Gable Walls
Cut them out a little "wonky"—a sharp knife or a cutting wheel is all you need. We don't need regularity this time! And then decorate them beautifully.

2. Decorate the Roof
The roof is a large surface that is immediately visible on any gingerbread house. In this video, I'll show you how you can work with icing and a brush to create a completely different style of decoration than what I've shown you so far.

3. Try the Cobweb Icing
In this video, we'll show you the magic that the icing you use for decorating can perform.

4. Final Assembly with Ghosts
And now, all that's left is to add all the accessories we've decorated to the house. With this final step, you'll create a true Halloween story.

Tip for you
If you've never decorated any kind of gingerbread house, you should definitely try it now for Halloween. Any unevenness or imperfect parts will be part of the spooky house story. Get your children involved in the storytelling, and you'll immediately see how many new gingerbread cookies they'll want to decorate.
